Drum Lessons

 

A career spanning more than 50 years as a teacher and performer.  Rusty is based in Atlantic County South Jersey and originally from Philadelphia. Known for his innovative drumming styles from jazz, rock, Jazz Fusion, big band, showroom, R&B, funk, Contemporary Christian, Worship, Gospel, Orchestral....

 

Rusty brings out the best in his students and many are established professional drummers today.  Some of his students have received full and partial scholarships to prominent schools such as University of Miami / Rowan University/Boyce College. 

Rusty is currently accepting new drum students of all ages in private or online.

 

Beginners:

Learn the proper way to hold the sticks (traditional & match grip), introduction to music notation/rudiments/rhythms.  Basics for concert/marching snare drum, introduction to the drum set.  Having fun while learning!

Intermediate:

Expand your vocabulary, studies with emphasis on dynamics, phrasing and control, increasing creativity, improvisation, orchestral snare drum reading, hand/finger technique (Moeller), bass drum foot technique, double bass drum, brushes, working with a click track, sight reading, chart reading.  Learn how to play the drum set for all styles of music: Rock/Pop/Contemporary Jazz/traditional Bebop/Big band/Afro-Cuban/Christian/Gospel/Blues/Reggae/Latin/Progressive Rock/Jazz Fusion…..Play along with an assortment of tracks.  Learn how to optimize practice time for the most effective results

Advanced:

Be challenged on the most complex drumming concepts such as:  Difficult ostinatos (Rumba/Son Clave'), theme improvisation, odd time signatures, playing over the bar, poly rhythms, independence, displacing the beat, Playing and soloing over the melody, etc...
